What’s a worse Chillul Hashem, the claim Torah greats erred about reality or the claim the Torah contradicts reality?If the Torah really wrote things we fail to understand, such as Parah Adumah, we are certainly obligated to bow to the Torah and its Divine imperatives.But if the written Torah and Chazal inform us of things which accord precisely to reality, and then later Jewish sages come along and tell us the Torah says things which do not accord with reality, there is a great Chillul Hashem, as though the Torah contradicts reality. Better we publicly admit and announce Torah greats erred, and the Torah is true than the reverse, as though the Torah itself contradicts reality.
Does Financial Independence in Israel ‘Defile the Land’?
Dr. Nadav Shnerb quotes Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch zatzal in a letter as saying the new campaign to settle the land of Israel “defiles the land” by building marketplaces and factories. Had he said so (Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, indeed, writes virtually that), that would be ridiculous, of course. But this is a distortion.
Here is the relevant portion from “Tikkun Olam“, 5696 p. 50-51:
כל איש ירום תרומה לד’ מיגיעתו ופרנסתו בעבור החזקת אחינו יחיו היושבים בקודש על התורה ועל העבודה […] ובכל עת עיני קדשם צפיות, להטיב את המצב, באשר רק יכלו, ולא הי’ דבר נשגב מהם לעשותו, לטובת אחינו שבקודש יחיו ורק במשבצות החזקות התורה והיראה. המה זכותם יגן עלינו, הקדישו את הארץ, רק לד’ ולתורתו, ולא נתנו טמא את הארץ, בכל גשם וחומר, בתי מסחר, בתי עבודה וחרשת, קדושה הארץ…. הוא לכל ישראל, עד בא עת דברו הטוב, אשר השביע את אבותינו, יתברך ויתעלה, וברוח פיו ע”י גואל צדק, יקבץ נדחינו בב”א.
ומה זה המריץ, את פקודי השרים במדינת פולין, ליסד אגודה לישוב הארץ, בבנין בתי מלאכה ועבודה […] האם אהבתם לעמם גדולה מהאהבה אשר אהבו נשיאי ישראל, את עם קדשינוו בימים ההם, או שבבינה יתירה, חיננו מאת האלקים להבין כי בא מועד ח”ו מכר הצורה בעד החומר, הגידו נאף האפשר הדבר והראוי הוא אשר האדמו”רים שליט”א בפולין ועסקני אשכנז יחיו, סמל אחד יציבו להם, שלובי זרוע ילכו, אל העגל אשר העמידו ח”ו וח”ו להחטיא את ישראל, האם לא כן הוא, אלו בונים בתי חרושת בישראל, ונותנים דעתם על מוסדי חינוך לבני ובנות ישראל, בטעם ערוך ומסודר, ואלו קונים נחלאות בא”י ומשתתפים במוסדי חינוך לבנים ובנות חבצלת והדומה ושניהם כוונתם רצויה להחרחיב את הישוב, עפ”י טהרת תוה”ק […]
