In Chutz La’aretz some Jewish youth manage to overcome their evil inclination and refrain from using smartphones for half of each Shabbos. This is called “Half Shabbos”.

Why?

Here is my theory:

Yerushalmi Eruvin 3:9:

ר’ בא ר’ חייה בשם ר’ יוחנן (שיר השירים א’) בני אמי נחרו בי וגו’ מי גרם לי להיות נוטרה את הכרמים על שם כרמי שלי לא נטרתי מי גרם לי להיות משמרת שני ימים בסוריא על שלא שמרתי יום אחד בארץ. סבורה הייתי שאני מקבלת שכר על שנים ואיני מקבלת שכר אלא על אחת.

מי גרם לי להפריש שתי חלות בסוריא על שלא הפרשתי חלה אחת בארץ. סבורה הייתי שאני מקבלת שכר על שתים ואיני מקבלת שכר אלא על אחת ר’ יוחנן קרי עליהון (יחזקאל כ’) וגם אני נתתי להם חוקים לא טובים.

So, each day of keeping Yom Tov in Chutz La’aretz is only rewarded like keeping half a day of Yom Tov in Eretz Yisrael.

And keeping Yom Tov is like keeping Shabbos.

Rashi in Parshas Emor (Vayikra 23:3):

ששת ימים, מה ענין שבת אצל מועדות ללמדך שכל המחלל את המועדות מעלין עליו כאלו חלל את השבתות וכל המקיים את המועדות מעלין עליו כאלו קיים את השבתות.

Why should we pay taxes?

For the children, of course. Everything we do is for the sake of the children.

Take the intelligence agencies. Their black ops’ budgets are black holes, but we need them desperately, of course.

And that helps the children?

Sure. If invaded or subverted by foreign intelligence agencies, who would suffer most? The children.

Of course. So, we all need to pay taxes for intelligence agencies to protect the children, is that right?

Of course.

Well, what is this I hear about intelligence agencies molesting children for the sake of blackmail?
