A Chassid once met a Litvak for the first time. This is what their conversation consisted of:

Chassid: Please tell me, what is the difference between us two?

Litvak: Are you sure you wish to find out?

Chassid: Yes.

Litvak: Tell me a Chassidic saying, please.

Chassid: The Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Zalman of Liadi, once said that Shabbos without Kugel is like Rosh Hashana without a Shofar.

Litvak: Eh, so what do you call Rosh Hashana that falls out on Shabbos without Kugel?

Chassid: Thank you for answering my question.

Litvak: You are welcome. And thank you for reminding me to pray for the return of the Temple and Sanhedrin (cf. Maimonides Laws of Shofar chap. 2, end) – in spite of the Meshech Chochma Leviticus 23:24.

I am discontinuing the “Bama’avak” newsletter. It had interesting and important material on the Charedi military draft, but their email subscription was ineffective, and the editors ignored my queries. The final straw: Hyehudi.org just received issue 23# but never issue 22#. So it’s over (but nothing will get deleted).

There appears to be a problem in always following the Arizal. Here’s one example. The Arizal says one should not set one’s fixed study session of Scripture at night. (This is the most lenient and, I think, accurate interpretation. The Ari was/is taken by many Chassidim to “forbid” reading even Tehillim or Chumash at night, and the like!) This sounds reasonable for those whose time is their own. But what of a blue-collar worker who finishes work late and whose only viable daily learning opportunity is a Tanach class? Was the Arizal speaking only of extra piety, or ‘Midas Chassidus’?

היות ששמעתי באיחור רב מה שיצאו בהתקפה נגד הדר”ג, וגם באו הדברים בדפוס בעתון הטפשי דמתקרייא יתד נאמן.

מצאתי לחובה לבוא הפעם בכתב להביע את דעתי הקלושה, שאין להתייחס להדברים שנאמרו כלל וכלל.

ואדרבה ??? את כבוד גדול להדר”ג שליט”א, כי בחר בו את המטרה לחציו.

וכמאמר אאזזצוקללה”ה “מצרף לכסף וכו’ ואדם לפי מהללו” שפירשו מי מהלל אותו וד”ל.

ורק לפלא על ירידת הדורות ושפל המחשבה, כי לוקחים ברצינות דברים מאלה וכאלה, וכמאמר החכם “לא תוכל לנצח את… אלא בשתיקה”.
