Respect for the Presidency

The article is interspersed with some comments.

Prime Minister Golda Meir is purported to have said that she can ultimately forgive the Arabs for all the terrible things they have done, but she can never forgive them for making killers of our children.

He mangled the quote; Meir said she can forgive Arabs for killing Jews but not for forcing us to kill them in self-defense. Rabbi Bloom purposely mangled the quote because he denies the right of self-defense, like any other antizionist.

That quote comes to mind as we contemplate and observe what is going on in the United States election campaign. We could forgive the candidates for all their lashon hara and hotzaas shem ra about each other, but I don’t know how it will be possible to repair the disrespect they are creating for the presidency.

Rabbi Bloom obviously knows little history about vicious US presidential campaigns and even less about the actions of past presidents. Although, yes, mistrust accelerates (let’s not even ask why!). And how exactly does one non-Jew speak “lashon hara and hotzaas shem ra” about another non-Jew?!

Let me explain: We are here on this world to honor Hakadosh Baruch Hu. We say every day in U’va l’Tzion, “Baruch Hu Elokeinu she’baranu lichvodo.” We bless Hakadosh Baruch Hu Who created us “to honor Him.” Hashem understood, however, that when we are removed from the spiritual, it is sometimes difficult to honor a spiritual being. He therefore created a miniature model for us to observe — the human, physical being that we call a king. The peoples of the world show this earthly king honor, respect and awe. We can learn from that experience how to honor Hashem.

Apparently, to his romanization, Bloom and his ilk have “created God”. Let’s keep the “king” metaphor alive!

Reminds me of the Rambam’s theory on Enosh, (Hilchos Avoda Zara 1:1)

A story is told that way back in June of 1953, the Telshe Rosh Yeshivah, Harav Elya Meir Bloch, zt”l, searched for a way to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. He wanted to follow the dictum of Chazal to see how the nations of the world give honor to their kings.

I remember when John F. Kennedy became president. He was sitting with his close friends, some of whom had known him from childhood, watching the election returns. When it became obvious that he was to be the victor, the mood in the room suddenly changed. The friends of his youth rose in unison and solemnly addressed him as “Mr. President.”

There was a time when this country had respect for our president. That was long ago. I am not sure what exactly happened. Perhaps it started with the newspaper editorials that began to poke fun at our elected officials. It then progressed to the late night comedians, and entered into America’s homes.

His historical knowledge is nil. He seems to waste Torah-learning night time on TV comedians.

But it is a grievous error. If we disagree with the policies of a president, we have the option of organizing ourselves in an election year and voting in a new president. We do not have the right to tear down the position of the presidency.

Ha! To paraphrase a past president, “Presidency is not the solution, it is the problem“. Hinting to him the true nature of the institution would be wasted on his likes.

There was also, perhaps, a corollary in our own world. When we started to make fun and talk disrespectfully of presidents, we began to lose respect for our Jewish and Torah leaders — beginning with the leaders of our generation and moving along soon enough to the Gedolei Yisrael of previous generations. I try to stay as far as I can from the blogs, but from time to time I am shown some horrifying samples. It is appalling to see the level to which some have sunk. Afra l’puma.

“Afra Lepuma” is literally “dirt in the mouth”, as in “bite the dust”. This means the rabbi is cursing various people with death (assuming Bloom thinks before he writes). Judaism doesn’t seem to matter to him so I won’t quote those sources, but perhaps “incitement” or “defamation” does. Although he does misspell the second word, which should be “lepumei” — perhaps intentionally if we are to ascribe some intelligence to this writer.

It does not start there, however. It starts with disrespecting authority. It also does not end there. It ends with, R”l, blasphemy.

Maybe no one ever explained to Shmuly how arguments are made. Assertions do not suffice. Show specific exempla of A leading to B leading to C.

It is disheartening to see the way the current president of the United States is referred to even by young talmidei chachamim and mechanchim. There is derision and denigration that can only be a result of following irresponsible media that freely attack the president and his position. The Torah derech is taught to us in the Midrash which tells us that Hakadosh Baruch Hu told Moshe Rabbeinu to address Pharaoh (who, you might remember, was killing Jewish children) with respect.

How is the media “irresponsible” by demonstrating some responsibility? Moshe was actually facing Pharaoh, and Pharaoh was king, unlike Obama (yet). To the contrary, perhaps this prophecy is meant as an exception; only in this case was respect for an evil king warranted. Although Rashi Breishis 48:2 is a good source, Rashi Shemos 6:13 is not.

I was recently at the Yeshivah of Philadelphia High School graduation, where the graduates pledged allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and sang the national anthem. From there I went to the home of the Rosh Yeshivah, Harav Shmuel Kamenetsky, where an American flag was proudly displayed outside his home. I must admit that it seemed odd in 5776, but upon reflection I realized that this is the Torah mesorah. Respect for authority leads to respect of the Ultimate Authority, Hashem. Disrespect of authority leads to disrespect of everything that we hold dear.

How can anyone be asked to respect the natural elites when they, in turn, respect the unnatural elite? What kind of Jewish rabbi is an authoritarian?!

And what about Bloomer disrespecting not just vox populi but even “young talmidei chachamim” (by his own admission)?

I would hope that the presidential candidates, after they are formally nominated, will raise the level of their debate. However, if they do not, I think it is obligatory that our mechanchim and Rabbanim, as well as our Jewish media, realize how devastating this could be to the chinuch of our children and intensify lessons about kvod habriyos and kvod malchus.

The ignoramus doesn’t know what “kvod habriyios” is at all.

Why is a writer in Hamodia advocating children read presidential debate transcripts? Unless he means historical ones like Hamodia-idol Abraham Lincoln.

To conclude, I suspect the man has forgotten even the small amount of Torah he once knew, due to many hours watching TV, yet not understanding even that.

P.S. There really is a connection between the loss of faith in politics and in rabbis. Many rabbis are part of the public theft system known as politics.

Whatever Happened to the Beloved Mishna Berurah?

The nature of a false Heter is often such that it does not fulfill its own terms (such as those who wear sheitels (wigs) including in areas these are unknown, contra Mishna Berurah 75:15). Here’s another example: smoking on Tisha Be’av. Many are those who repeat the slogans about always following the Mishna Berurah, no matter the other opinions or the strength of the MB’s specific position. Yet some of these individuals are shown in a bad light when it comes to Mishna Berurah 555:8. The MB clearly limits his dispensation to smoking in private, yet they do so in public as well.

This is especially jarring because the rhetoric regarding their opponents is of excommunication (as always!), but that is what the MB nearly recommends for them!

אסור לעשן טיטון (שקורין רייכערין) אפילו בד’ צומות וכ”ש בט”ב [כנה”ג] והחמיר מאד עד שכתב שמי שמעשן בט”ב היה ראוי לנדותו ויש מאחרונים שמקילין וע”כ מי שדחוק לו שמורגל בו ביותר יש להקל אחר חצות בצנעא בתוך ביתו וכ”כ בשע”ת בסימן תקנ”ט סק”ג

The Chazon Ish Against Mussar Talks and Brisker Chakiros

Emuna Ubitachon (Chazon ish) chapter 3:18 says this:

ומן החיוב להאריך בחיוב למוד ההלכה מפני מיעוט התלמידים בדורנו, והשרידים – מהנדחים לכל אפסים בים ההבלים של רוח עועים – מעטים וספורים המה, וממדת האהבה והחמלה לשקוד על השרידים היחידים האלה שלא ידח מהם נדח, אבל להקושיים הטבעיים לקנות דברי תורה ולהוספת כשלון מצד השוטנים, רבה העזובה בבית המדרש פנימה, הגורם להתרשל מעיון ההלכה הדק היטב, ולבלות הזמן ברעיונות ומחשבות בדויות לב, ולחדש חידושים אין בהם ממה שנאמר למשה מסיני, אף שהן שיחות של יראת שמים ותיקון המדות, או חקר חיצוני בהלכה, אבל אינן מספיקות את התכלית המבוקש מהאדם עלי חלד, כל שאינן מתלוים עם ידיעת התורה הדינית וכמו שנתבאר לעיל.

והנה אותן שמעמידים חכמתם על שיחות מוסריות, והגיונות חיצונות בהלכה, נכשלים להאמין כי זהו חובתו של אדם בעולמו, ובעיניהם כי כן התנהגו התנאים והאמוראים, וחלק ההלכה האמתי היה אצלם עראי, ובאמת קשה להוציא טעות מושרשת מאז ומעורה מרב הימים, ואמנם אין להתעלם שזה שקר מוחלט, ואין ספק שאם שמענו מבעלי השיחות שמשתבח לי’ בפלוני דגברא רבא הוא, הכונה בשיחות והגיונות מקסימות ומושכי לב, ואם כה היתה כונת רבא ב”ק מ’ א’ על ר”א ב”י, היה מן הראוי לר”נ לשאלו במדרש והגדה, וכשבא לפניו שאלו הלכות, למדנו שהתפעלות הנפש של גברא רבא היינו בלימוד ההלכה, והיה המנהג למנקט שוקא לצורבא מרבנן, וכשבאו לבחנו ב”ב כ”ב א’ שאלו אותו בהלכה, וכשמצאוהו שאינו משיב החליטוהו שאינו תלמיד חכם, וכשעמדו לפני פטירתו של ר”א הגדול, אדר”נ פכ”ה, היו שואלין לו בטהרות בטמאות במקואות, ועוד הפליג שם ר”א לפני מותו בעונש ההתרשלות מלימוד ההלכות.

סנהדרי גדולה שישבה בלשכת הגזית שזה מרכז התורה ע”פ התורה, והממרא על דבריהם במיתה, ועל פיהם יוצאין למלחמה, ועל פיהם מעמידים מלך, מה דרשו מהם, בקיאות בהלכה, בדיני איסור והיתר, בדיני ממונות, וביתר ההלכות, כמבואר בר”מ פ”ד מה’ סנהדרין ה”ח.

Mocking Those Who Flout The Torah’s Laws

Disclaimer: There be laws against insulting “Public Servants” in Israel, so I do not recommend the following actually be done.

It’s always a pleasure to notice some literary piety. A samizdat religious publication recently referred to a “shofet” (Israeli government judge) as “shuftena” (Aramaic for “madman”).
