Lechem Hapanim Reenactment and Repast

The Temple Showbread (Lechem Hapanim) Revived

Raphael Morris’s interests in Temple Mount and in Baking (he’s a professional baker) combined recently, in a Temple Institute project to re-enact the preparation and ceremony of the “show bread” (Lechem Hapanim) – perhaps for the first time since the destruction of the Temple 2000 years ago.

Raphael explained that The Temple Institute decided to dress some Cohanim (descendants from the Priests) in the reconstructed Priestly garments which the Institute has painstakingly made as closely as possible to the original Priestly Garments of the Tabernacle and Temple.

Rav Baruch Kahana, The Institute’s rabbinical authority advised them that rather than do this as an isolated event, they should have the Cohanim wearing these garments as a part of a bigger event. As I understand it, similarly to the rules concerning taking a Sefer Torah out of the Ark, this should only be done for a purpose, such as to read it, rather than out of curiosity.

The Institute decided that an appropriate ceremony to re-enact, with the Cohanim wearing their priestly garments, was the ceremony of the showbreads.

In the time of the Tabernacle and Temple, the showbread was baked once a week, and the Cohanim ceremonially replaced the old bread on the Table (shulchan) with the new bread.

The Institute decided to hold a reenactment of the Showbread ceremony, at the Old City Community Center, on Tu B’Shvat.

To the best of their knowledge, this has not been done since the Temple was destroyed.

A member of the Temple Institute team of experts researched what is known about the preparation of the showbread and guided the volunteers how to practically prepare the bread.

In the Tabernacle, there were 12 show bread loaves, replacing the week-old 12 breads. So for a full reconstruction reconstruction, 24 loaves were required.

According to the research, each showbread loaf was made from approx 4kg of coarse wheat flour, resulting in some 6kg of dough. This, multiplied by 24, equals 144 kg of dough.

Furthermore, the loaves themselves were large, some 60cm long by 40cm wide, and 8cm thick, with ‘walls’ of 10 cm at the two ends, to make a “chet” shape.

The Institute decided that the showbread should be kneaded for 40 minutes and baked for 40 minutes (considerably longer than the 18 minutes for matzo). In a one-loaf capacity kneading machine and oven, this would therefore require 16 hours of continuous production.

Raphael obtained the permission of the owner of the bakery where he works in Hod Hasharon to use their commercial oven, with capacity for six loaves. And the Institute rented a commercial scale kneading machine.

The Institute was concerned that large quantities of ‘showbread’ would be left to waste, and so they decided to cut back the project to 12 loaves, enough for a full Table.

Raphael took over the bakery for an all-night session, working solo, and he kneaded and baked the loaves. He used standard aluminum pans as a mold for the ‘walls’ of the breads.

There was no way to check the texture of the inside of the bread, so Raphael worked from instinct.
They came out crusty on the outside and fluffy inside.

Foreign Politicians Get Their Cue from Israeli Politicians

The UN Vote: It’s Not Obama’s Fault

By Shmuel Sackett

In the last few days I have read over 100 emails, Facebook posts and articles that had one common denominator; Obama betrayed Israel in the recent UN vote.

While I am no fan of Obama, I must state – loud and clear – that Obama did NOT betray Israel. Everything that happened in the UN on December 23 rd (the day of the vote) was due to one person and one person only. It was not Samantha Power, America’s ambassador to the UN. It was not John Kerry, America’s secretary of state and it was not even the President himself, Barak Obama. All of them were simply following the lead of the one person who is responsible for this terrible UN vote. His name is Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel. Allow me to explain.

For the last month, all we talked about in Israel was a town called “Amona” and how the Israeli government plans on destroying the 40 Jewish homes that have been built there. The families who live in Amona are all religious Zionists; the men served in the IDF, fought for Israel and risked their lives. They built homes in an area that has not seen more than a goat in over 2,000 years, yet the Israeli government calls their settlement illegal… the same words used by the UN in their recent vote!!

Three weeks ago, Prime Minister Netanyahu gave an interview on “60 Minutes” to Leslie Stahl. When asked about his position on a Palestinian state, Bibi said the following; “Two states for two peoples. That’s where I’m focused.  I’d like to have President Trump, when he gets into the White House, help me work on that.  I’d like to see if the Arab states can help me achieve that. It’s a new reality.  A new possibility.”

That was an exact quote from Israel’s Prime Minister… so why is everyone screaming about a UN vote that said the same thing?

Don’t believe me? Well, did you actually read the text of UN Resolution 2334 of December 23, 2016? I did, and will quote some relevant parts here. As you will see, every word below – every single word – is the position of the current Israeli government led by Netanyahu, Bennett, Lieberman and Deri.

The resolution begins by calling Israel an “occupying power”. My non-politically correct comment is that the UN is right… we ARE an “occupying power”. Since Netanyahu, Bennett, Lieberman and Deri are ALL against complete annexation of the land… we are therefore occupying someone’s else’s land! Like it or not, that makes us an “occupying power”!

Naftali Bennett and his “Jewish Home” party call for the annexation of Ma’ale Adumim and then down the road a few other areas, but he has stated over and again that “Area A” should remain in the control of the Palestinians. This means that even Bennett wants to keep Israel as an “occupying power” … which is exactly what the UN stated… so why should Obama have vetoed that???

Chanuka: ‘Who, Whom’?

The Politically-Incorrect But True Story Of Hanukkah

Erev Shabbath Qodesh Parashath Wayeshev/Hanukkah 5770

In a nutshell, here is the prelude to the valiant war fought by the Hashmonaim (Makkabim) about 2,165 years ago:

The powers that be at the time offered “the honor” of performing an act of avodah zarah to Mattithiyahu ben Yohanan, the High Priest.

He refused.

The powers that be offered it to another, who accepted.

However, before he had a change to perform this act of avodah zarah, he was killed by Mattithiyahu.

As one could imagine, the powers that be were not at all thrilled the prospect of having their authority threatened. Sound familiar?

And so, Mattithiyahu, his sons, and increasing number of followers retreated, plotted and planned, and fought on of the most spiritually important wars, Israel has ever fought. Well, they were all important.

But who was it that they fought?

Do most Jews, inside or outside of Israel, even know the answer to this question?

Examples of attempted answers to this question include:

1. Syrians
2. Greeks
3. Syrian Greeks
4. Selucid Greeks

How about Jews? That’s right. Jews. Jews were among those the Hashmonaim fought and killed.

Assimilated, Hellenized Jews.

“Oh, but that was then; this is now.” (Huh?)

“No, the Westernized Jews of today have a different status now.” (Why?)

“No, you don’t understand. There aren’t really any rasha’im (evil people) today. It’s not their fault. We have to show them, and bring them back to Torah.” (Even though the Gemara says otherwise. Uncensored Rav A. Y. says otherwise as well.)

And these responses are coming from religious Jews! I do not even have to complicate matters by listing some of the responses from the non-religious, or so-called “liberal” ones!

Now, I am by no means, suggesting the we go around killing people that we don’t like, let alone try to sort out all who I think is evil or who you think is evil.
