What is your opinion about the recent election of Rabbi Goren as the new Chief Rabbi in Israel?

A:

Last week I spoke about this already. But in case somebody didn’t hear me, I’ll repeat it because it’s important. The election of the new Chief Rabbi in Israel is a national misfortune. And that’s really enough said. These two persons should have refused to run against two older rabbis [Rav Issar Yehuda Unterman and Rav Yitzchak Nissim]. Two older rabbis against whom there were no accusations except that they were too frum. And those accusations are not even true anyways. When old Rabbis are accused of being of being too loyal to the Torah then nobody should have dared to be a candidate. And anybody who was elected on such grounds is, is – I don’t want to say what he is.

בצל המלחמה: אימוני ירי אינטנסיביים שמבצע צבא ירדן בסמוך לגבול עם יישובי עמק הירדן, מעוררים בהלה בקרב תושבים באזור שחוששים מתרחיש דומה לזה שקרה בעוטף עזה. לדברי התושבים, מדובר באימונים חריגים ביותר, שתדירותם רק הולכת וגוברת.

פניות רבות מצד התושבים הועברו עד כה לצבא, שנענו בתגובות אדישות כמו “מדובר בירי תקין” או “אני חדש בתפקיד ולא יודע מה היה כאן לפני כן”. בעקבות האירועים החליטו בקיבוץ אשדות יעקב הסמוך לגבול לקיים הערב פגישת חירום יחד עם תושבים ואנשי הביטחון בישוב.

הצבא מגביר בחודש האחרון את ההגנה על הישובים. בפיקוד מרכז מדרגים את בישובים מ-1 עד 4 לפי דרגת הסיכון ופועלים לחזק הגנות. גורם ביטחוני מפיקוד מרכז סיפר לחדשות 14 על ההיערכות בגבול עם ירדן: “בשנתיים האחרונות עשינו ריכוז מאמץ בגבול המזרחי והקמנו חמ”ל משותף של משטרה, צבא ושב”כ עם יחידת של מג”ב שיושבת תחת חטיבת הבקעה והיא ייעודית לעיסוק בעניין ההברחות ואירועי פח”ע הוקמו גם אמצעי תצפית ומכ”מים בגזרה, גלויים וסמויים מתחילת המלחמה תוגברו פי 2.5 את הסד”כ ממה שהיה לפני המלחמה ושומרים על הבקעה 4.5 גדודים”.

לפי מה שידוע כרגע לחדשות 14, אין הכנות לתרחיש יחוס של תקיפה רצינית מירדן מדינה שכרגע נמצאת ביחסי שלום עם ישראל. בירדן יש אתגרים חדשים בעקבות המלחמה, אך ממה שמתפרסם בחדשות בעולם הערבי, יש מפגינים בתוך ירדן שרוצים להיכנס לעימות עם ישראל, דבר שממשלת ירדן מונעת.

אתמול פרסמו מספר תושבים מהישוב הודעות ברשתות החברתיות, בהם התריעו מפני הסכנה המתקרבת: “בימים האחרונים אנו עדים ביישובי עמק הירדן ל”אימונים ותירגולים” של הצבא הירדני צמוד לגדר הגבול”, כתב אחד התושבים. “אנחנו שומעים בזמן אמת את היריות מעבר לגבול, אימונים בירי חי, קרוב מאוד אלינו.
יש תושבים ותושבות שגרים כאן עשרות שנים ולא זוכרים אימוני ירי סמוכים ככה לגבול שלנו”, ציין.

“בהתחלה זה היה ‘אימון’ מפעם לפעם, חצי שעה, בשעות הערב. אולם התכיפות וזמן ‘התרגולים’ גדלו. עכשיו ‘האימונים’ האלה נמשכים כמעט כל ערב, לפעמים כל הלילה, עד הבוקר, הרבה אחרי שעת הזריחה. המרחק שלנו מגבול ירדן הוא פחות מ-2 ק”מ. אלפי חיילי קומנדו ירדנים, יכולים בקלות לחצות את הגבול, לטבוח ולשחוט תושבים בקיבוצים ובמושבים שלנו ולעשות בנו שפטים ופוגרום דמים נוראי”, המשיך ותיאר התושב.

איך זה לא מדליק אצל אף אחד מנורות אזהרה וזרקורים אדומים?”, זעק אותו תושב שאמר כי התריע בפני מי שצריך אך לא נענה. תושב אחר התריע אף הוא כי “גבול השלום” הסמוך יכול להפוך בן רגע לגבול מלחמה: “אם יתרחש אירוע דומה לזה שקרה בשנת 1997 בו שוטר ירדני רצח את נערות מבית שמש שטיילו באזור, או שלפתע יחליטו ערבים מירדן לחצות את הגבול כמו שהיה ב7.10.23, מי שיעמוד בחזית זה כיתת הכוננות במקרה הטוב, אבל אני כאזרח או משפחתי נהיה הקורבנות הראשונים”.

“החל מהשבעה באוקטובר יש ערנות מוגברת בצד הירדני באשר לתרגילים וזאת על פי מקורות הצבא והשאלה שנשאלת היא “מי האויב שלהם כאן באזור שהם יורים ליד הגדר?! למה צבא ירדן יורה או מתאמן כך על הגדר שלנו ולא בצד הסורי או הסעודי?”, תהה התושב: “מהחיים האישיים שלי ומעבודות קודמות עם מגוון האוכלוסיות למדתי ש”גבול השלום” או גבולות אחרים מסביבנו, אינם שקטים כי הם רוצים שקט או כמו שאומרים כל מיני פרשנים בערוצים השונים “חיזבאלה או חמאס אינם רוצים בעימות” – אלא בסך הכל מחכים ליום פקודה”.

לדבריו, “המצב כרגע בגבול הוא שכל מהגר עבודה אפילו יכול לחצות את גדר המערכת ונהר הירמוך ללא בעיה. זהו מצב של הפקרת חיי התושבים. אני, כמו רבים מחבריי, לא מבין מדוע האימונים נמשכים. מדוע דווקא עכשיו. מדוע לא מרחיקים אותם מאתנו. מדוע אף לא אחד עוצר בעדם. אני לא מבין למה צה”ל לא שולח יותר כוחות לאיזור, בסמוך לקיבוצים ולמושבים שלנו ולתוכם”.

“שלא תטעו, ביקשנו עזרה, ביקשנו הבהרות, פנינו למפקדים בגזרה, אך לא קיבלנו תשובות מרגיעות. (להגיד, אני חדש בתפקיד ולא יודע מה היה כאן קודם זה לא תשובה ובטח לא פתרון.) כיתות כוננות זה אחלה אבל הן לא תספקנה מול גל או גלים, של חיילים ירדנים, עם סכין בין השיניים ורצח בעיניים”, הוסיף וכתב.

“קלטנו באהבה אלפי מפונים (כינוי מכובס ל”פליטים בארצם’) מהצפון, בגלל חשש מהאויב שם. זה אבסורד שעכשיו, גם כאן, חייהם וחיינו בסכנה. אני צועק מכאן לצה”ל, לכוחות הביטחון, לשב”כ, לראש הממשלה, למשרדי הביטחון ולכל מי שאחראים לשלומנו ולבטחוננו: מדובר בסכנה ברורה ומיידית! אני מבין שאתם “עסוקים במקומות אחרים”, אבל חיינו בסכנה”, קרא התושב.

מדובר צה”ל נמסר: הדיווחים והפניות העולים בכתבה נבדקים במלוא כובד הראש. צה”ל יחד עם כוחות הביטחון פועלים לחיזוק מאמץ ההגנה במרחב באמצעות תגבור כוחות לוחמים והוספת אמצעים טכנולוגים נוספים במרחב.

The ‘Poskim’ Who Enabled the Shalit Deal Are Directly Responsible for the Invasion

Israel’s deal for Gilad Shalit may have paved the way for October 7

In 2011, there was intense debate in Israel about the wisdom of a swap of roughly 1000 convicted Palestinian prisoners for Gilad Shalit.

There were two main lines of argument. One is that such a lopsided swap would result in more kidnap attempts. The other is that the released terrorists would be likely to kill more Israelis in the future.

I myself argued that the swap should happen, before we knew the identity of the released prisoners:
Yes, statistically there is a good chance that there will be future attacks involving some of the  terrorists in this swap. But chances are the attacks would occur anyway with different people. Brainless terror drones  are a dime a dozen in the territories.
The organizers who actually dream up new ways of killing should not be released. But most of the terrorists in the swap, from what I can tell, do not fit that description.
However, Israel didn’t only trade low level terrorists as I had thought.
The most senior terrorist released in the Shalit deal was none other than Yahya Sinwar, the top leader of Hamas in Gaza today. Deif, along with Al Qassam Brigades leader Mohammed Deif, was (according to reports)  the person most responsible for the October 7 massacre.
Sinwar was not the only major terrorist released in 2011. No fewer than 30 of those released had been sentenced to at least one life term for murder.

Why They Fight Us (Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner)

While Yishmael possesses spiritual merit, Hashem explicitly promised Avraham that “lo yirash ha’am hazeh, this nation (of Yishmael) will not inherit the Land” — not then, not now, and not ever.

This painful realization on the part of Yishmael has led to them spilling rivers of Yiddishe blood and perpetrating indescribable horrors, but none of that will change the facts on the ground. This Land will never belong to them.

Many years ago, there was a time when Arab terrorists were hijacking planes going to and from Eretz Yisrael and holding Jewish passengers hostage. One such hijacking, in Elul 5730/1970, targeted the rosh yeshivah of Yeshiva Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin, Rav Yitzchok Hutner, along with his family and some students. The hostages were held for several weeks, and the entire Torah world was galvanized to do everything possible to ensure the safe return of Rav Hutner.

At the time, the father of one of my childhood friends and neighbors was not only a very prominent pulpit rabbi in the Bronx, he was also a well-connected person in Washington. In addition, Rabbi Shalom Rubin had been one of the first students of Yeshiva Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin. Rabbi Moshe Sherer z”l, the legendary askan and head of Agudath Israel, led the efforts to save Rav Hutner, who was not in good health at the time. Rabbi Sherer called Rabbi Rubin and authorized him to travel to Washington and reach out to all his contacts, to bring international pressure on the countries responsible for this tragedy and to work for the release of the Rosh Yeshivah.

After several weeks of nonstop shtadlanus at the highest levels, word came that the Rosh Yeshivah and his family and several students had been released and were en route to the United States. Due to his integral role in this effort, Rabbi Rubin was given permission to go onto the tarmac to be one of the first to meet the Rosh Yeshivah. Rabbi Rubin called his son Moshe, who was in my home at the time, and told him to get ready as he would be picking him up to come with him to greet the Rosh Yeshivah — and he invited me to come along.

As we were waiting for the plane to come to a stop at the gate, we saw the door to the terminal open and watched as the gadol hador, Rav Moshe Feinstein ztz”l, took his place as the first to greet Rav Hutner upon his arrival. From my vantage point, I watched the Rosh Yeshivah emerge from the plane in very weakened condition, and I saw Rav Moshe literally run to him. They hugged each other while crying with much emotion and relief. I saw Rav Hutner whisper something to Rav Moshe, who nodded his head in agreement, and then Rav Hutner was escorted to the waiting ambulance.

On the way back home, I asked Rabbi Rubin what Rav Hutner had told Rav Moshe. He answered that Rav Hutner said, “I looked into the eyes of the captors and saw in them the burning anger at the fact that ‘lo yirash ha’am hazeh,’ they will never inherit the Land.”
