Szól a Kakas Már – Chazan Shimon Farkas & Chazan Dov Farkas, 2013 March of the Living Ceremony
Apr 19, 2013
Two hundred years ago, the Rabbi of Kalev, wrote “Szól a kakas már”, his most famous composition, a song expressing the deep yearning for the redemption of the Jewish people and their return to the land of Israel. The song has given hope to Jews for centuries — and its melody was heard even here in Auschwitz-Birkenau as the Hungarian prisoners arrived for the final journey.
“Szól a kakas már” was sung by the Internationally renowned cantor, Chazan Shimon Farkas whose family roots are in Hungary. Three of his grandparents perished in Auschwitz. Chazan Farkas was joined by his son Chazan Dov Farkas for this song.
The annual March of the Living program brings thousands of young people from around the world each year on Holocaust Remembrance Day to Auschwitz-Birkenau to honour the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and to pledge to build a better world for all humanity.
